You’re The One That I Want…

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

“Well this car is systematic, hydromatic, ultramatic
Why, it could be Greased Lightnin’!”

That’s right, Grease is heading back to the stage, but not before yet another series of laughter, cringing and crying at the vast multitude of contestants on NBC’s latest reality show, ‘You’re the One That I Want’. Which cool dude will win the chance of playing Danny Zuko and which lucky lady will get the opportunity to be Sandra Dee….? Over the last few months, contestants have been whittled down from thousands to just 12; six Dannys and six Sandys. We’ve already seen ‘Serious Sandy’ and ‘Second Chance Danny’ eliminated which leaves the question on all of our lips….who will take the crown? Only the American Public can decide.

In the U.S version of the show, Billy Bush and our very own Denise Van Outen will be hosting whilst the judges panel is made up of theatre producer David Ian, quirky Jim Jacobs and director-come-choreographer Kathleen Marshall. The idea for the show came from Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Ian after the blazing success of the BBC’s ‘How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?’ where the lead role for the Sound of Music was cast to an unknown hopeful. The show began on U.S. screens on 7th January 2007 and with only a few shows left, the four contestants are undoubtedly beginning to get butterflies in their bellies now. The Broadway show goes live in June this year.

ITV have staked their claim to the reality show crown by airing a British version of the show, ‘Grease is the Word’ later this year. Grease is coming to the West End and contestants will be subject to the same abuse that you would have seen on X factor and Pop Idol. Cancel your social life and get your VCR dusted off because you’re going to be watching, listening to and reading all about this for the next few months…

Reality TV Musical Talent Shows 2007

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

ITV kickstarted the reality TV musical talent show with the upcoming “Grease is the Word”, set to find the Danny Zukos from the Danny Devitos and the the Sandra Dees from the Sandra down your local chippie. From April 7th your evenings will be sorted for televisual viewing as we watch the good and bad versions of the Grease legends strut their stuff in front of the David Gest, theatre producer David Ian and West End star Sinitta.

Channel four have also jumped on the bandwagon with the T4 program “Musicool”, a group of unsigned singers are put through their paces and are whittled down to a select few. This select few will be trained by choreographers and vocal coaches to star in a musical which will be aired in the West End this summer. It’s a bit like a musical X-Factor with a hint of Big Brother and with ten winners, the ten are put into a house in Camden and we watch their musical progress, catfights and love stories evolve.

Following the success of “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria” the unlikely duo Graham Norton and Andrew Lloyd Webber are back with “Any Dream Will Do”.
The Camp Duo will search high and low for a Joseph to put in that Technicolor Dream-coat and take him straight to the West End.

Check out the websites for more information on the reality TV musical talent shows and start re arranging your nights out to be nights in!

You’re the one that i want - not the only one!

ITV’s talent show ‘Grease is the Word’, set to start in April, looks like it might have some competition. It’s rumoured that Jason Donovan and Donny Osmand are teaming up to host a rival talent show ‘Grease is the Word’. The show will appear on BBC 1, as a follow up to the smash hit ‘How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?’ and will also feature presenter Graham Norton and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

But can even this dream team threaten the ratings-magnet that is the inexplicably popular David Gest? David will be joined by top theatre producer David Ian and West End diva Sinatta on the panel of judges for ‘Grease is the Word’ in the search for lead performers in the West End rival of ‘Grease’. ‘Grease is the Word’ starts on April 7th and the stage show will preview on 17th July at the Piccadilly Theatre - provided they can find some raw talent to take on the challenge of playing Sandy and Danny…

Take a look at this vid to get you in the mood for ‘Grease’, you’ll be singing along before you know it!

Grease returns to West End

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

Grease is coming to town! Everyone’s favourite high school musical is coming back to the West End this August. And that’s not all, ITV are running a high-profile talent show, ‘Grease is the Word’, hosted by Zoe Ball, to search for two unknowns to take on the roles of Danny Zuko and Sandra Dee. The show is produced by Simon Cowell’s production company, Syco, and judges on the show will be David Gest, top theatre producer David Ian and West End star Sinitta. Look out for the show from 7th April, it runs for 10 weeks until 9th June - I for one can’t wait! The stage show will preview from 17th July at London’s Piccadilly Theatre and open properly from the first week in August.

Grease has been around for ages, but has never lost it’s popularity. The 1978 movie cemented it’s reputation as a classic, with it’s raw energy and fantastic performances from John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. Interestingly, Henry Winkler (aka Fonzie from Happy Days) was originally offered the role of Danny, but turned it down for fear being typecast.

It’s going to be a summer of Grease, so dust off those skintight pedal-pushers, get a perm and enjoy the ride!

Pop onto ITV.com to find out more about the search for lead performers.
