Another Grease Couple Are Left Stranded At The Drive In

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Well three couples down, five remain and we breathed a sigh of relief when our favorites Anthony and Alison were kept in. This week they chose a soulful song and blew the audience away, keep up the good work!

Susan Mcfadden really shone this week and proves a strong competitor for the role of Sandy, however that cant be said for her partner Danny B. He overacts, is very false and his upper lip really resembles a pringle crisp. Yet saying this I reckon Susan is going to carry him along because she actually has talent - but for how long can pringle lip dodge the chop? We shall have to tune in Saturday night to see.

The Cheese King Has Gone

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Well I was right in my prediction, the judges woke up, smelt the stilton and kicked Richard out this week. Although he calmed down his cheese-tastic performance, his cocky nature prevailed and lost him his place. However the batten of cheese has been handed over to Michael and in my opinion he is keeping the stilton strong with his funny facial expressions and singing technique. Michael and Vicky are strong contenders in this competition and I don’t think they will be kicked out anytime soon, but with their scandalous kiss at the end of this weeks performance their luck could be changing. Vicky and her boyfriend both auditioned for parts in Grease and were dubbed the ‘Grease Lovebirds’, but her boyfriend was let go at boot camp leaving Vicky to go on alone. No doubt her boyfriend was in the audience rooting for her - I wonder what he thought of the kiss?

Yet again my favorites Anthony and Alison gave a great performance oozing energy and fun, they really pushed themselves vocally this week and it paid off. I still think they have a good chance of winning ‘Grease is the Word’ but it’s down to the public - so get voting!

Go Cheese Lightening

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

Well Well Well it seems that the ‘cheese factor’ has stuck with a few contestants since the auditions - Richard should have be awarded a Stilton crown for his performance this week as it was that bad. Over the top is too milder expression to use for when watching him prance around the stage and to make it worse he caught Anthony Kavangha’s horrendous hip grinding motion (oh yes we all remember his audition!). Just take a look for yourself if you can bare to watch it.

I have to say though that I am backing Anthony and Alison to win as they have so much energy, have the most fun and definitely look the part. However Anthony still hasn’t quite got to grips with his dancing but at least he is damn sight better than his atrocious audition. Alison on the other hand is the whole package, she is the spitting image of Olivia Newton-John and has both signing and dancing talents. We shall just have to wait and see if my predictions are right in the upcoming weeks, finger crossed for them!

Poor Tom

Monday, April 30th, 2007

What on earth went on with Grease is the Word this week? The British public actually managed to vote out the only guy who could have made a convincing Danny. Kate could have done with some work, but she was by no means the worst Sandy there. Terrible result!

This highlights a problem that I have with the show. Not only are individuals chances completely dependent on the performance of their partner, but when they get voted out, it’s as a couple. I know the idea is that they work as a team, but if one person is simply more talented than the other, it’s totally unfair. I really think Tom was the best potential Danny in the show and I struggle to pick out another who could do the job half as well.

So there’s my thoughts on Grease. I just hope that next week the other contestants, particularly the boys, will have upped their performances - otherwise I’ll be very concerned that David Ian will have to look elsewhere for his Danny!

Tears, Egos and so much more

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

So the sixteen finalists have been named, we are left with eight Dannys and eight Sandys. Is there a REAL star among them, the only way to find out will be to watch them in the live finals. I don’t believe that we have seen the best of any of the contestants yet, so hopefully the live shows will bring the superstars to our attention and ease David Ian’s ever-increasing worries.

Week by week he is getting more and more stressed, as the pressure of a West End flop seems to enter his thoughts. Personally, I believe the Danny and Sandy will be more than good enough to tread the famous boards of the West End Stage and the new Grease Musical will be a big hit. Saturday’s show saw him call a meeting to discuss the apparent lack of chemistry amongst the contestants, two separate pairings later and did he see what he thought would be a perfect couple? I’m not sure but i think the judges had their eyes on Danny (slightly cocky one) and Susan (Westlife bloke’s sister). They seemed to pair the two together in the hope that the sparks would fly, it seemed that it didn’t have quite the desired effect. Although i think Susan has the right look and voice to be a serious contender in the competition.

There were plenty of tears from 24 year old Joanna as she broke under the pressure of singing for the judges, am i naive or will singing live on TV and then the West End Stage be slightly more daunting? She made it through and time will tell whether she has the bottle to survive on the bigger stage.

There are still 16 contestants to concentrate on so maybe the winners aren’t really clear yet - the live finals are sure to throw a few surprises our way and as for public voting… Who knows what the phone votes are going to produce because they always seem to get rid of the favourites to much shock on the judges’ faces.

The competition will really hot up now we’ve hit the live shows, so keep tuned and see if the best Danny and Sandy wins as i have a funny feeling that they might just not…

The Sandys and Dannys have been chosen

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

The wheat has been separated from the chaff. The final sixteen contestants in ‘Grease is the Word’ have been chosen. Eight Sandy’s and eight Dannys will battle it out over the next few weeks. As for who will be Danny, it’s anyone’s guess, but my money’s on Susan McFadden for Sandy. I have an aversion to her brother Brian, and as a consequence I don’t really warm to her, but I can see that she’s the strongest performer and has the perfect look for Sandy. But then again, it’s early days and I could be proven wrong, I’ll just have to keep my Saturday nights free for the next few weeks to find out…

Grease is a slippery slope

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

Darn it, I’ve been sucked in. I find myself looking forward to Saturday evening… and not because I’m going out with my friends. ‘Grease is the Word’ seems to have somehow become the highlight of my week - dangerous! I’m particularly interested to see how Cherrill Dixon does this week. She looks nothing like Olivia Newton John, but I reckon she could be really special in the part and bring something totally new to a show that’s been around for years. Grease was considered quite edgy when it was first performed in the 70’s, but has now become a classic. I think casting an unconventional Sandy would give it back the spark it could possibly be in danger of losing…

The Good, The Bad and The Terrible

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Watching ‘Grease is the Word’ on Saturday, I can’t begin to understand what some of the auditionees hear when they sing. I can’t sing and I know that no-one would ever pay (or even be paid) to listen to me. So where do these people get the impression that they could possibly be cast as Danny and Sandy for a REAL West-End production of Grease.

Some of the talent on show is exceptional and it makes you wonder why these people haven’t yet made the grade in the theatre. Does it really take a TV show to give young people the opportunity to shine on the stage? From the good to the utterly terrible, Grease is the Word shows us that every level of talent can come with the highest degree of self-belief.

Howard from Manchester showed us a different type of Danny Zuko when he couldn’t quite get his jacket off at the start of Greased Lightnin’, and followed this up with some deep vocals as he attempted to wow the judges with his opera-singing. When David Gest asked if anyone had ever compared him to Pavarotti, he simply replied ‘Thanks’ sending Gest into a fit of laughter. Genius!

The star of the show seemed to be Danny, the young hopeful that struggled with a stammer. As he burst in to song, the stammer disappeared and we were reminded of Gareth Gates performances on Pop Idol. The judges were facing the possibility of a sympathy vote, but David Ian cast those thoughts aside as he assured Danny he was through to Bootcamp and it was solely on merit.

There was also the amazing dancing of Mehmet, who as David Gest described danced as if he was dying of piles. Mehmet saw himself more as a Marlon Brando-esque actor, and even claimed that his talent attracted a lot of jealousy. Unfortunately, Mehmet failed to impress the judges unlike Susan McFadden.

Susan, sister of former-Westlife star Brian McFadden, had a great voice and even impressed the panel of judges with her American accent. I’d say that talent runs in the family but not being a fan of Westlife it wouldn’t feel right. Susan made it through to Bootcamp and I believe she has a real chance of going all the way. Watch this space…

You’re The Only One We Want

Friday, April 13th, 2007

The Grease love birds have been torn apart leaving Ben ’stranded at the drive inn’.

Last week’s “Grease is the Word” saw the hopelessly devoted couple Ben Jardine and Vicky Hoyles put though to boot-camp with hopes that their real life love could be transported to the West End Stage. Both Ben and Vicky were desperate to play Danny and Sandy however their dreams have been dashed as viewers will see over the next fortnight when Ben fails to make the grade. David Ian, the stage shows producer, has some serious money tied up in the show and claims that only the best can be put through. If you can bare to watch Ben’s reaction to his Sandy having to find another Danny and the heartbreaking separation - tune in this Saturday 6.40pm ITV1.

Check out ITV’s Grease is The Word for more information and backstage gossip on the show and contestants.

Grease Has An Electrifying First Show

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Well the first “Grease Is The Word” was certainly action packed with many laugh out loud and cringe worthy moments. I found myself hiding behind a cushion when a 50-year old “Sandra Dee” in tight lycra leggings began dancing provocatively in front of David Guest and signing in a sultry voice. It was made even more cringe worthy when she broke down in tears saying she wanted to prove to her family that she could sing.
The deluded Sandra Dee’s didn’t stop there, the hilarious Paula was a Sandy to remember, being David Ian’s number one fan she showered him with gifts and performed her song and dance just for him. For a laugh the judges put Paula through and David Ian was rewarded with a snog, as she slapped a kiss on his face, she stuck her tongue in - much to Ians shock!
Yet even more surprises followed as the 90s pop sensation Kavanagh resurfaced to audition for Danny Zuko, bearing a slight resemblance to John Travolta he nervously sang his heart out. Although due to a muscular strain he danced pretty weirdly to Justin Timberlake, it was mostly pelvic thrusts which were embarrassingly amusing, nevertheless he got through to the next round.
Grease Is The Word had all the elements for an addictive show, squirm worthy moments, laugh out loud comments and plenty of characters which have bold personalities. Be sure to catch the next installment 6.05pm Saturday ITV1 and 8.40pm ITV2 for backstage gossip with ‘Greased Lightnin’.
For your amusement I have found a clip of Paula and a few other Grease wannabes, prepare to cringe
