When reading Zoe Tyler’s column in The Stage newspaper this week - it became quite apparent that she favours a couple of Nancys and nit picks the ones she doesn’t like. I don’t really think she is very fair when it comes to critiquing and openly picks holes in perfectly good performances.
It was her critique of Jodie that got me all riled up, personally I think she did an outstanding job on Saturday night and is a strong contender for the role of Nancy. Week after week she wins people over and strives to achieve the goals set by the judges.
What does Zoe say about her performance? Well she does admit (probably through gritted teeth) that she sang and acted really well, however she then goes on to say that the key was dropped and the song was nowhere near as high as it should be. Tyler calls it a “cop-out” and that Jodie is “scared of it, or just doesn’t have the vocal range”. To be honest Zoe this is not Stars in Their Eyes and you do not have to sing the songs in the exact same way (as many of the other girls have proved). I think that Jodie made the song her own and sang it beautifully, what’s wrong in altering the song to suit your voice - besides we all know she has a good vocal range as she’s shown us before in previous songs. Tyler has made it no secret that she doesn’t rate Jodie - but to nit pick to this degree is just sad really. Swallow your pride and just say that you were wrong about her.

Tyler also rips into Jessie saying “Jessie was told by the panel that she needed to get the old Jessie back, I didn’t really notice - it was average and missable”. I thought this was a bit of a harsh comment, she could of at least mentioned some of the positives - like the fact she’s worked on her movement and acting skills. Instead, as Jessie is one of her non-favourites, she heads straight for the insults.

It’s funny, being a vocal coach I would of thought that Tyler picked up on fact that Rachel hit some duff notes and was nowhere near as strong as previous weeks. However she launches straight into “another impressive performance from Rachel, she was stunning and effortlessly flips from her belt voice to her soprano with ease.” Not really this week though aye - come on be fair.
This weeks column just proves that the producers were right not to put her on the panel, as it is purely favouritism that sways her vote and not talent.

So to sum up, here are Zoe’s top, middle and bottom choices for leading lady.

Top

• Rachel - the west end actress
• Ashley - the drama teacher
• And Samantha - favourite with the male population

Middle

• Sarah - she gives Sarah both good and bad comments

Bottom

• Niamh - there is a competition going on between Niamh and Samantha as they are the two youngest girls in the competition - Zoe quite clearly prefers Samantha to Niamh.
• Jessie - I think she is going against the grain on this one, everybody likes her - so Zoe must hate her!
• Jodie - poor Jodie has taken the brunt of Zoe’s criticism over the past weeks and I really don’t know why. Must just be a personal dislike.

Lets just see how she reacts to the next show, I wonder if she’ll stick to her favourites or mix it up a little.
