Bad Girls - Criminals, Lesbians and Grumpy Old Prison Wardens.

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Hmmm so they have made a musical based on the ITV show, ok ok it worked for Grease but thats a whole different kettle of fish!
For those who watched the show it’s basically a collection of the highlights, it takes us back to the very beginning and revolves around key characters from the first series, in a story of deception, romance, revenge, and the occasional riot!
For those who don’t know it’s a musical about a female prison called Larkfield, its devious inmates and it’s obscenely corrupt prison wardens.
Yes…well it did well on television but will it really portray that well on stage? I can’t really see the gritty fights having the same emotion and drama when sung full pelt in a theatrical fashion, the reality of the situation is lost in the translation from TV to stage.
However I could be totally wrong and it could have a Chicago type edge to it, I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Changing the subject, I think it’s quite amusing where they are getting their new ideas from, we have had reality TV shows and now we have an actual TV show, I’m just wondering what we will have next - The Bill? Good old Reg and the rest of the Sunhill crew prancing around on stage as they attempt to arrest a drug dealer whilst singing and grappling for the knife? or Heartbeat - the thrilling tale of village life on the West End stage! hmmmmm I don’t think so do you?

Rent Is Back In The West End!

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

The controversial, boundary breaking musical is back in the West End to capture the attention of a new generation. Openly discussing gay, bisexual and lesbian relationships with transgender characters, this is a musical like no other. However for those who don’t know the musical wont know about the dark centre to the story, Rent tackles the widespread disease AIDS and it’s morbid effects on a human body and mind. It’s an emotional and heart wrenching tale which transports the audience into a world of love, ambition, betrayal and uncertainty. A truly eye opening story which is definitely worth a watch, keep checking back to our site for information on tickets to the show.

Here is a snippet of the show.

CAST: Siobhan Donaghy - who post-Sugababes has recently released her second solo album, Ghosts - plays Mimi alongside Luke Evans (Taboo, Miss Saigon) as Roger, Oliver Thornton (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis) as Mark, Leon Lopez (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, TV’s Brookside, Hollyoaks) as Collins and Whatsonstage.com Award nominee Jay Webb (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) as Angel. Also in the cast are: Francesca Jackson (Joanne), Craig Stein (Benny), Ruth Augilera, Jamie Sampson, Antony Luperi, Earl Perkins, Lewis Griffiths and Philippa Stefani.

Grease Opens In The West End

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

It’s safe to say there has been mixed reviews on the opening night of Grease, however it’s the audience’s behavior that came under the scrutiny of wagging tongues! The theatre code of conduct was pushed to the limits shall we say and it tarnished the nights events. However through the midst of all the audience palaver Susan and Danny gave a strong performance, Susan was congratulated on her voice and Danny on his impressive dancing skills and his performance, despite having no theatrical experience.
Although it seems there were a few hiccups on opening night, I reckon Grease is still going to be a roaring success and as my manager says “it just needs time to settle….like a fine wine”.

Extensions are all the rage in the West End!

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

This year in the West End it’s all about extending shows, Lee Mead was the first to kick start this new extension craze by announcing (before the doors had even opened for the first preview!) that he shall be prolonging his West End debut by 5 months.
Soon to follow suit was the guest star of Chicago - Duncan James, due to appear as Billy Flynn for 7 weeks, the ex-boy band member has stepped up to the plate and performed so well that he has extended his stage debut to 10 weeks.
The hilarious Spamalot has also jumped on the band-waggon and has pushed it’s comic antics back to the 1st March 2008, the recently opened Buddy Holly will be rocking and rolling till 28th June 2008 and 1 day old Grease has met the audiences demand and extended their running to the 14th June 2008.

I am not surprised that we are seeing so many extensions in theatreland, because in my opinion the quality of shows being opened in the West End this year is absolutely outstanding. There is definitely more hype around the West End at the moment which is a clear sign of more good things to come! Watch this space.
