I Vote Stomp To Be The Next UK Dustmen!

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Who Knew rubbish and dustbin lids could be exciting, well Stomp certainly proved us wrong. A clever cast of energetic bodies throw themselves around the stage tunefully playing everyday objects.
With no speech, no dialogue and no plot, the cast of Stomp do well to capture the audiences attention with their ‘trash’ symphony”. Like the contents of a rubbish bag, it’s a mix of stuff - music, dance, choreography and performance art, but unlike rubbish it doesn’t stink, it’s a well produced piece of art and well worth a watch.
A dynamic, fast paced, physical extravaganza which is fun for all the family, it’s pure stage magic.
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself picking up a wooden spoon, or a dustbin lid and tapping away to a tune after seeing this show, taking the bins out will never be the same again.

Now if only dustbin men could be as tuneful in the morning!

The Lion King - Cartoon Verses West End

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

When booking to see the Lion King don’t be fooled by your memories of the sweet fairy-tale Disney film, oh yes this fantastic stage version has gone above and beyond that cutesy cub to bring you an exotic extravaganza of song and dance.
With colourful masks, costumes, stilts and puppets, the stage version brings more passion and vibrancy than the Disney’s cartoon.
Prepare for your eyes and ears to feast on the juicy storyline and to wash down the thrilling action with a cup of steaming Elton John songs , a true banquet for any wild bunch.
Bursting with dramatic scenes and passionate dialogue, you cant help but get caught up in the story and be amazed by the African atmosphere brought to the theatre.
So leave the DVD in the player and head on down to the West End to watch a spectular and more impressive version of the Lion King - it’s more magic that Disney’s castle!

Gielgud Theatre gets a make-over

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Cameron Mackintosh has decided to spruce up the Gielgud theatre. The idea is to recapture the original look of the theatre from 1907. The theatre already had new carpet and seats fitted in the run up the opening of Equus, starring Daniel Radcliffe Griffiths, but the new improvements will be to the outside of the theatre. The plans are to remove the existing signs on the outside of the theatre and extend the main canopy along Shaftesbury Avenue. Architects Renton Howard Wood Levin are now using early archive images of the nearby Queen’s Theatre to come up with a design for an impressive new canopy that will be unveiled at the end of June. Keep your eyes peeled for the new look…

Lord of the Blogs

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

A performer in the upcoming Lord of the Rings Stage Show, Stevie Tate Bauer, has started her own blog on the ‘The Alternate’, a blog site for designed to give an alternative view of Theatreland. The blog is run by the Society of London theatre. In her blog, Steve talks about the four months of rehearsals the cast of Lord of the Rings have undergone - with the male ensemble starting their circus training three weeks before the rest of the cast. I never knew it was such hard work being an Orc - I would have though all you had to do was run round and look threatening! All this work is leading up to a premiere on May 9th at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

Lord of the Rings promises to be a pretty exciting piece of theatre, something that the director Matthew Warchus describes as ‘a cross between Shakespeare and Cirque Du Soleil’. I can’t wait to see Tolkein’s masterpiece brought to the stage for the first time, the theatre will add a whole new dimension to one of the greatest stories ever written. Roll on May 9th!

Take a look at this vid to get an idea of the musical spectacle that is Lord of the Rings on stage…

‘Any Dream Will Do’ for Young Hopefuls

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

Thousands of young wannabes will be queuing up to impress the judges on BBC1’s summer extravaganza, ‘Any Dream Will Do’. The show is pretty similar to last year’s The Sound of Music star-search, where young ladies auditioned to join the West End cast as Maria. If you didn’t see it, check out the clip below for a little taste of what you missed and last year’s winner Connie Fisher.

BBC will obviously be hoping that last year’s success will continue with the search for a new Joseph. With this in mind they’ve teamed up Graham Norton and Andrew Lloyd Webber again with the old adage in mind, ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’. With a whole host of celebrity names being linked with the show, it is destined to be a massive hit.

The winner of the show will follow in the footsteps of such big-names as Jason Donovan, Donny Osmond, Philip Schofield, Boyzone’s Stephen Gateley and even Ian ‘H’ Watkins from the pop group ‘Steps’. Jason Donovan made the 1991 stage version a massive success, bringing with him his popularity from BBC’s ‘Neighbours’ and his subsequent pop career. Watch the pop video below that accompanied the success of the musical and Donovan’s role in it.

The show looks like it’s going to hit UK screens in June 2007, and with so many huge names rumoured to be attached the expectation is huge. If anyone knows anymore post it here so we can keep regularly updated.

The Sound of Aoife Mulholland

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

After recovering from a vocal strain, Connie Fisher is now stepping down from her full time roll as Maria Rainer. That’s right folks, on her doctor’s orders, the star is now taking Monday night and Wednesday afternoon off so she can relax and catch up with what’s going on Wisteria Lane and keep an eye on Mo’s dodgy dealings in Albert Square. Fear not, the show will go on as Aoife Mulholland will be stepping in as a replacement on these nights. Fourth placed in the show, ‘How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria’ Aoife finally gets her chance to shine in the show after her huge success in Chicago. As from 9th april, you will be able to catch Aoife live on stage.

You’re The One That I Want…

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

“Well this car is systematic, hydromatic, ultramatic
Why, it could be Greased Lightnin’!”

That’s right, Grease is heading back to the stage, but not before yet another series of laughter, cringing and crying at the vast multitude of contestants on NBC’s latest reality show, ‘You’re the One That I Want’. Which cool dude will win the chance of playing Danny Zuko and which lucky lady will get the opportunity to be Sandra Dee….? Over the last few months, contestants have been whittled down from thousands to just 12; six Dannys and six Sandys. We’ve already seen ‘Serious Sandy’ and ‘Second Chance Danny’ eliminated which leaves the question on all of our lips….who will take the crown? Only the American Public can decide.

In the U.S version of the show, Billy Bush and our very own Denise Van Outen will be hosting whilst the judges panel is made up of theatre producer David Ian, quirky Jim Jacobs and director-come-choreographer Kathleen Marshall. The idea for the show came from Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Ian after the blazing success of the BBC’s ‘How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?’ where the lead role for the Sound of Music was cast to an unknown hopeful. The show began on U.S. screens on 7th January 2007 and with only a few shows left, the four contestants are undoubtedly beginning to get butterflies in their bellies now. The Broadway show goes live in June this year.

ITV have staked their claim to the reality show crown by airing a British version of the show, ‘Grease is the Word’ later this year. Grease is coming to the West End and contestants will be subject to the same abuse that you would have seen on X factor and Pop Idol. Cancel your social life and get your VCR dusted off because you’re going to be watching, listening to and reading all about this for the next few months…

Reality TV Musical Talent Shows 2007

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

ITV kickstarted the reality TV musical talent show with the upcoming “Grease is the Word”, set to find the Danny Zukos from the Danny Devitos and the the Sandra Dees from the Sandra down your local chippie. From April 7th your evenings will be sorted for televisual viewing as we watch the good and bad versions of the Grease legends strut their stuff in front of the David Gest, theatre producer David Ian and West End star Sinitta.

Channel four have also jumped on the bandwagon with the T4 program “Musicool”, a group of unsigned singers are put through their paces and are whittled down to a select few. This select few will be trained by choreographers and vocal coaches to star in a musical which will be aired in the West End this summer. It’s a bit like a musical X-Factor with a hint of Big Brother and with ten winners, the ten are put into a house in Camden and we watch their musical progress, catfights and love stories evolve.

Following the success of “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria” the unlikely duo Graham Norton and Andrew Lloyd Webber are back with “Any Dream Will Do”.
The Camp Duo will search high and low for a Joseph to put in that Technicolor Dream-coat and take him straight to the West End.

Check out the websites for more information on the reality TV musical talent shows and start re arranging your nights out to be nights in!
